Strong welcome for news of Strabane Woolworth’s takeover

12 January, 2009

Sinn Féin Chairperson of Strabane District Council, Cllr Jarlath McNulty, has said that with all available indications pointing to the former Woolworth's Store in Strabane being taken over by a discount retail company he hopes that most, if not all, of the 30 former Woolworth's employees can now secure re-employment.

He said,

"There was great sadness locally at the loss of Woolworth's in Strabane and in particular for the loyal staff who gave so many years of service. All available indications now point to a discount retail outlet having taken over the former Woolworth's Store with a possible opening as early as next month. There are also strong indications that the new owners are keen to re-employ staff formerly employed at the Woolworth's Store, and I would hope that most, if not all could now secure re-employment with the new company.

"This news has come as a major New Year's boost to the local economy. In particular it will help to re-energise the town centre, which has been hit badly with business closures in recent years. Given the nature of the new franchise, I have no doubt that additional shoppers, both local and visiting, will be attracted into the town centre which should have a knock on beneficial impact on other town centre businesses."
