Israeli ceasefire must be genuine and permanent - Adams

18 January, 2009 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has said the ceasefire called by Israel last night must be genuine and permanent. He said Israel must take its military our of the Gaza Strip at once and no time should be wasted in building a lasting peace process based on direct dialogue, political negotiation and respect for human rights.

Gerry Adams said, "The ceasefire called by Israel is good news for the Palestinian People of the Gaza Strip who have been bombarded for three weeks and have seen at least 1,140 of their people slaughtered with thousands more injured.

"Israel's ceasefire must be genuine and permanent and they must pull their military our of the Gaza Strip at once.

"No time should be wasted in building a lasting peace process. This should be based on direct dialogue, political negotiation and respect for human rights." ENDS
