Maskey welcomes rates assistance for Councils
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Local Government, Alex Maskey welcoming finance Minister, Nigel Dodd's announcement today of rates assistance for Councils said:
"While the measures announced by Nigel Dodds today may not alleviate all of the problems faced by Councils, I do believe that it will assist in minimising many of them
"Most of the concerns raised by the NI Local Government Association (NILGA) have been addressed in that the effects of the shortfall caused by the successful appeals by the British Ministry of Defence and BT will be greatly lessened by the fact that rather than having to absorb the total in one lump it can be spread over five years.
"The change in the way Councils net revenues is calculated and other cost saving on development of the new IT system will also help councils to keep local rates down.
"In the present economic climate this will be received as mostly good news by local councils."
