Ó Snodaigh calls for explanation of exorbitant Garda spend on Shell protest
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has called on the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern to explain why over €1million was spent by the Gardaí in just one month policing the protest against the Shell gas pipeline in Mayo.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh was speaking today after figures released to him from the Department of Justice showed that €1.035million was spent in October alone on policing the protest in Mayo.
He said, "The Minister for Justice must explain the cost of policing the protest against the shell gas pipeline. News reports from back in August 2008 showed that overtime alone had reached over €11million which is more than half the allocation to Operation Anvil which targets gang crime. These protestors are not hardened criminals - they are ordinary people making a stand against a major company.
"The Minister must also explain why the figure for the month of October was far higher than that of other months at just over €1million. This money would be much better spent on policing real problems in Irish society such as the drugs trade which is fuelling gang crime throughout the state." ENDS
