Sinn Fein welcomes DSD committees request to suspend Social Services Review

22 January, 2009 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on benefits, Mickey Brady, has welcomed today's decision by the DSD committee to write and request that the Minister for Social Development suspend the strategic business review into social services.

Speaking earlier Mr Brady said:

"Sinn Féin welcomes the DSD's committee decision to write and request that the Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie suspend the strategic business review of social services.

"Given the current circumstances of economic downturn to review and restructure the social services staff levels would have a detrimental double impact.

"It would create further levels of unemployment reducing staff levels, with up to 490 job losses. On top of this such reductions would lead to staff shortages in benefit offices, especially front line services.

"This is at a time when social security staff are dealing a greater demand for their services as unemployment levels rise. As a result the levels of benefit processing and payments have increased vastly with the highest recorded levels of unemployment for decades." CRIOCH
