Sinn Fein deeply concerned at Tyrone County Hospital announcement

22 January, 2009

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has expressed his concern at news today that Tyrone County Hospital will no longer be able to care for acutely ill medical patients beyond March 2009.

Mr Doherty, this morning joined fellow West Tyrone MLA's Barry McElduff and Claire McGill, in meeting with the Chief Medical Officer. They were joined by Sinn Fein's Health spokesperson and deputy Chair of the Assembly's Health Committee Michelle O'Neil MLA.

Speaking on the announcement Pat Doherty said,

"Obviously this news will come as a shock for people in Tyrone; however it is simply further confirmation of what has been happening on the ground. People who have needed acute Hospital services have been directed elsewhere as opposed to Tyrone County.

"Following this morning's announcement and our meeting with the Chief Medical officer, a number of questions remain unanswered. In the time ahead we must ensure an effective ambulance service remains in place and that a timescale for future, practical development of hospital care in the Omagh area is implemented.
