Margaret Ritchie continues to stall on Mortgage relief scheme

23 January, 2009 - by Fra McCann

Fra McCann, Sinn Fein MLA for west Belfast, has accused the Minister of Social Development of dragging her feet regarding the implementation of an effective Mortgage relief scheme.

Fra McCann said,

"Last February Margaret Ritchie said that she was going to bring forward a scheme to help those people who have fallen foul of building societies and face loosing their homes, almost 1 year on all we have had is a consultation process that is widely recognized to have been a waste of time.

"At the time, Sinn Féin said that the minister knew what the problem was and knew what needed to be done; in the time it has taken her to deal with this issue hundreds have lost their homes.

"I call on the Minister to stop delaying on this issue and explain, in lay persons terms, what she intends to do to help those people now suffering, no more smoke and mirrors, no blaming everyone else. We want the Minister to tell us in plain terms what she proposes to do." CRÍOCH
