Ó Snodaigh welcomes proposals for dealing with sex offenders
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed the publication of a discussion document on dealing with sex offenders by the Minister for Justice today. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said many of the proposals contained in the document are in line with Sinn Féin's proposals to create a highly secure system of monitoring sex offenders.
However he warned against the use of electronic tags saying they have proven to be highly expensive and provide a false sense of security in other jurisdictions.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "I welcome the bulk of the proposals contained in the document published by the Minister today. Many of them are in line with Sinn Féin's proposals to create a highly secure system of monitoring sex offenders. We have been advocating the establishment on such a system on a harmonised all Ireland basis many years now.
"However, I would urge caution on the use of electronic tags to track offenders. In other jurisdictions these tags have proven to be a highly expensive way of providing a false sense of security.
"It costs twice as much to electronically tag an offender than to supervise them by a member of the Probation Service and the private security companies that administer the electronic tagging schemes do not routinely follow up violations by individual offenders." ENDS
