Invest NI needs to support local manufacturers

29 January, 2009 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd has said there is deep sense of foreboding in Portadown after the loss of 200 jobs in the area in one week.

Mr O' Dowd s comments come after the news that the Denny plant in the town is to shed 100 jobs earlier in the week forklift manufacturers NACCO shed another 100 jobs.

Commenting on the losses Mr O' Dowd said:

"The manufacturing sector and the construction industry in Portadown and Craigavon has taken hammering over recent years

"Yet in the middle of this economic downturn one local company with over 40 workers on its books and a full order book cannot get a visit from Invest NI never mind financial assistance.

"The company has outgrown its current premises and has the potential for sub contract work for an English company but the English company has concerns that the firm will not be able to deliver because of its current accommodation.

"However despite repeated attempts to involve Invest NI in the companies growth Invest NI has stood idly by while the company risks losing orders due to lack of space and investment.

"I would call on Invest NI to redirect its support to local indigenous business in cooperation with the local Council not in competition as it would appear to the case now." CRIOCH
