Government must intervene in Waterford Crystal dispute - Morgan

30 January, 2009

Sinn Féin Workers' Rights spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called on the Government to intervene in the dispute at Waterford Crystal and ensure that the receiver reverses his decision to close the company. Deputy Morgan was speaking this evening as workers at the factory continued to occupy the factory in protest against the receiver's decision to backtrack on his commitment not to close the factory while there investors are interested.

He said, "As I speak the receiver has private couriers calling to the doors of Waterford Crystal workers with letters informing them that they are being let go. This is a deplorable way for the receiver to be informing staff that they no longer have a job.

"The Government must intervene in this dispute and ensure that the receiver overturns his decision to close the company. Only yesterday he met with interested investors and made a commitment that he would not close the company while there are people with an interest in investing in it. He must not be allowed to go back on that decision now." ENDS
