Sinn Féin table motion calling in support of Women’s groups.
Sinn Fein MLA's Martina Anderson and Jennifer McCann have tabled a motion at the Assembly today calling for the Executive to ensure adequate funding is made available for women's organisations.
Ms McCann, the Party Spokesperson on Women said:
"Women's groups and women's organisations play an essential role in the delivery of services across the community yet they consistently have to fight for adequate funding so that the needs of women are met. Today's motion is calling for a more strategic approach to be applied by all Departments in respect of the way they fund women's organisations.
"Services include child care, crisis services, training and employment aid and health services. All of these services, and more, are under pressure and at many times over subscribed.
"Gender equality is one of the priorities in the programme for government and we are asking that women's groups and organisations are recognised for the essential frontline services they deliver in the community and are given adequate funding to carry out this work."
Party spokesperson on Equality and Human Rights Martina Anderson added,
"One of the cross cutting themes of the Programme for Government is to proactively change existing patterns of social disadvantage and deprivation. Community based women's organisations have a key role in achieving these goals.
"Women's organisations and groups are currently being starved of the funding they need to carry out the sterling work they do within communities. These organisations provide an invaluable service and that needs to be acknowledged by giving them the resources they need."
