Ó Snodaigh calls for scrapping of Home Choice Loan Scheme
Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has called on the Government to abandon its Home Choice Loan Scheme and instruct local authorities to focus on making affordable housing affordable. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said any surplus housing in the possession of local authorities that is not selling should be used as social housing and allocated as quickly as possible.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "Just four applications have been made for the Government's Home Choice Loan Scheme since it was introduced. Rather than looking to use this hare-brained scheme to try and off-load homes on people who were refused mortgages originally the Government should instruct local authorities to focus their energies on making so-called affordable homes actually affordable. Any surplus housing in the possession of local authorities that is not selling should be used as social housing and allocated as quickly as possible.
"Nobody is fooled with the government's claim that the Home Choice Loans Scheme was to support people who wanted to buy a home but couldn't do so under current credit systems. The fact that the scheme only applies for new build homes, shows that it was drafted as a bail out for developers who cannot sell their properties in the current financial crisis." ENDS
