Goodbody report on taxi licenses unbelievable - McDonald
March 9, 2009
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has described the Goodbody Economic report, which today advised against a moratorium on the granting of taxi licenses, as unbelievable. Ms. McDonald said anyone who, having studied the issue, comes to the conclusion that taxi drivers' earnings are not collapsing is quite simply living in cloud cuckoo land.
Speaking today after the publication of the report Ms. McDonald said, "Since the deregulation of taxi licenses in 2000 drivers' earnings have steadily declined while their working hours have increased. It is quite clear that deregulation has not worked and a moratorium on licenses needs to be introduced.
"Today's Goodbody Economic report, which advises against a moratorium on license, is unbelievable to say the least. Anyone who, having studied the issue, comes to the conclusion that taxi drivers' earnings are not collapsing is quite simply living in cloud cuckoo land.
"The fact is that taxi drivers are struggling as a direct result of deregulation and they need the support of the Government. The Minister for Transport must issue a moratorium on licenses." ENDS
