Sinn Féin call on Margaret Ritchie to bring forward her promised Mortgage Rescue Scheme
9 March, 2009
Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on Housing, Fra McCann, will speak tomorrow to his motion express expresses concern at the increasing levels of house repossessions and calls on the Minister for Social Development to bring forward a Mortgage Rescue Plan as soon as possible.
Speaking ahead of the motion Mr McCann said:
"On February the 28th last year the DSD Minister, Margaret Ritchie, promised she would implement a mortgage relief scheme. It is now march 2009, over one year on, and still the is no sign of her promised scheme.
"The latest figures showing mortgage possession were recently announced and showed an increase of 64%, with over 3,628 loosing their homes.
"These figures also highlighted that over 19,000 people in the north declared themselves homeless in the last recorded year.
"The vast majority of these people could not meet their mortgage payments.
"Earlier this month in the Assembly chamber, Margaret Ritchie clearly spelt out that this vital rescue scheme will have no timeframe as she has no funding for it. Many, many people would have been waiting anxiously on this scheme to save their homes.
"Margaret Ritchie needs to realise that you can't promise a mortgage rescue scheme to people who are in dire straits and currently under threat or actually loosing their family homes and give them false hopes.
"Sinn Féin are expressing our concern that in the current housing crisis, as repossessions continue to rise the Minister must live up to her responsibilities and deliver the long awaited mortgage rescue scheme."
