Progress in tackling Fermanagh ‘dental crisis’

16 March, 2009

Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has said that she expects 6 new dentists to be employed in Fermanagh shortly.

Ms Gildernew said:

“The lack of progress in employing new dentists who will deliver treatment on the NHS across Fermanagh has been a source of huge anger and frustration.

“My constituency office has been bombarded with complaints that there are no vacancies for children and the elderly within Dental practices in Fermanagh.  Anyone who has tried recently to join a register with a Dentist will know just how bad the situation is.

“However, I am very pleased to announce that contracts are now being finalised for six new dentists in the Fermanagh area and that these contracts should be finalised this year.

“These new arrangements should take the pressure off the current short-fall in provision.

“Each of these new dentists will be required to take on approximately 1,500 patients, who should mean that a total of 9000 patients can again be registered for NHS dental treatment within the County.” ENDS
