Doherty meets MoD Minister on Lisanelly transfer issue

18 March, 2009 - by Caitríona Ruane

West Tyrone MP MLA Pat Doherty met with British Under Secretary of State for Defence, Kevan Jones MP in London yesterday to press the MoD Minister on the transfer of lands at the former military base at Lisanelly for the purpose of developing an Educational Village Campus in Omagh.

Following the meeting Pat Doherty said,

“The meeting with Kevan Jones MP, who has responsibility for military sites within the MoD, was an extremely constructive one.  He was extremely well versed about the Lisanelly issue and exhibited much good will towards the planned Educational Village Campus.

“He said that sales/transfers of former military sites in the six counties are currently on hold pending the outcome of a strategic overview which is being undertaken by NIO Minister Paul Goggins.  However, it is now clear that the disposal of the Lisanelly site is a key issue in this strategic overview and I will now be meeting with Paul Goggins on the 7 April to press for speedy progress particularly in light of the recent announcement by Education Minister, Caitriona Ruane that over £1 million from her department's budget has been allocated for exemplary design work on the Educational Campus project.” Ends
