Wildlife and Natural habitats must be protected - de Brún

18 March, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has stressed her commitment to campaigning for the protection of our wildlife and natural habitats.

Speaking today ahead of a meeting with the RSPB at the Belfast Harbour nature reserve at 2pm Ms de Brún said:

“Belfast Lough is an Area of Special Scientific Interest and one of many that the RSPB take an active involvement in managing or sustaining.  Many rare species and migratory birds use the wetlands and grasslands at the Lough as a feeding site.

“The European Union has key pieces of legislation and directives surrounding such sites.  I have already asked questions in the European Parliament about progress in implementing this legislation and I am happy to further explore with the RSPB today how best this legislation can be utilised to protect and enhance such areas across the north and further afield.
