Environment Minister must spell out who or what he will target to reduce greenhouse gases if humans aren’t responsible- Sinn Féin

24 March, 2009

Sinn Fein MLA and spokesperson on the Environment, Daithí McKay, has called on Sammy Wilson to outline very clearly who or what he will target to reduce greenhouse emissions by 25% below the 1990 levels by 2025, as set out in the Programme for Government, if he believes that humans have not contributed to climate change.

Speaking ahead of a motion today at the Assembly challenging Mr Wilson on his views, Mr McKay stated:

“The Environment Minister, Sammy Wilson, has time and again proved that he has little or no understanding of the seriousness of climate change. The fact that he blocked the Co2 advertising campaign calling for people to reduce their carbon emissions is just another example of this.

“There is a very simple contradiction here. If Sammy Wilson does not believe climate change is man made then he needs to spell out who or what he is going to target to reduce carbon emission to 25% below the 1990 levels by 2025 as set out in the Programme for Government.

“On top of this, his own party, who have signed up for the Programme for Government, must answer the question today that are Mr Wilson’s views on climate change a party position or does Sammy Wilson stand on his own?

“The general public recognises that human activity influences Climate Change. Since the Industrial Revolution the earth has warmed up by 0.75 degrees celsius and this has already had a devastating impact on the world's poor and biodiversity. If this increases over the next couple of decades, as forecast, the environmental, social and economic effects will be devastating.”
