Mc Gill welcomes increase in Financial Assistance for Water Main Connections to rural dwellings

24 March, 2009 - by Michaela Boyle

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Claire Mc Gill has welcomed the announcement by DRD Minister Conor Murphy of an increase from £6,500 to £10,000 in the financial assistance being made available to householders requesting a water main extension to serve an existing property.   Claire Mc Gill who has been continually lobbying on the issue of mains water supply to residences, mainly in isolated rural areas, that are currently not served by the public water system has warmly welcomed the increase in financial assistance saying:   “I would like to commend Conor Murphy for pro-actively pursuing this issue.   There are around 4,500 properties identified as not being connected to mains water across the 26 District Council areas and this increase in grant assistance from £6,500 to £10,000 to connect properties built before 1 January 2000 will undoubtedly have a positive impact in reducing this total.    “This announcement is part of a wider policy initiative by the Minister to attempt to ensure that those who wish to have access to mains water supply will have that opportunity, not only in West Tyrone but throughout the six counties. A wider review     The Minister has also initiated a comprehensive review of the policy on providing financial assistance for water mains to serve rural dwellings. It is hoped that this will be concluded by the end of the year. ENDS
