McGuinness: Understanding the true effects of the recession
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA has stressed the importance of understanding the effects the current recession can have on our health and well-being.
Speaking at a public policy seminar supported by the Economic and Social Research Council the Minister highlighted the importance of developing research in this area to better inform policy decisions.
Mr McGuinness said: “It is essential that we understand more effectively how and why health inequalities occur between low and high income groups. We must examine more closely why the poor and disadvantaged are more likely to face illnesses during their lifetime than those who are better off.
“There is no single discipline that has the complete solution to the challenges we face in respect of public health matters. A diverse range of disciplines and funding bodies need to be brought together to tackle the health inequalities which currently exist. It is only through coordinated research action that we can hope to identify potential solutions and approaches to our public health challenges in light of the current economic climate.”
