Sinn Féin welcome Save the Children financial aid

7 April, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA, Jennifer McCann, has welcomed the recent decision by Save the Children to give one-off donations to help families who are in economic difficulties.   Speaking today Ms McCann said:   "While welcoming the decision by Save the Children to give families financial help in the form of a one-off payment it further highlights the level of financial crisis some families are finding themselves in.   ”This type of aid is normally reserved for programmes in the developing world and it is unprecedented for the charity to provide emergency support of this type locally.   ”Families are finding it difficult to find the money for essentials such as food and many children are going hungry. This results in children experiencing stress and being more likely to suffer ill health and low educational attainment.   ”Those families on low incomes or on benefits are being hit harder as a result of the economic recession and more has to be done to ensure families have enough food to eat.   ”It is totally unacceptable for anyone in today’s society to go hungry."
