Ó Snodaigh condemns dilution of post of Junior Minister for Drugs

22 April, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has condemned the downgrading and dilution of the post of Junior Minister for Drugs. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the proposed dissolution of the National Drugs Strategy Team must now be immediately halted.

Speaking this evening after the Taoiseach announced his new Junior Ministries and Ministers Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "This downgrading is happening at a time when the government has just approved the extension of the national drugs strategy to include alcohol.

"It is also at a time when the Government is in the process of dissolving the National Drugs Strategy Team and letting its staff go. This was being done on the premise that a new super-junior Minister for Drugs would be introduced. The dissolution of the National Drugs Strategy Team must be immediately halted and steps taken to ensure expert staff are not lost.

"Today’s announcement spells major disruption for frontline services tackling the drugs crisis. During the last recession the heroin crisis exploded. History must not be allowed to repeat itself." ENDS
