Fisheries review is last chance - Ferris

23 April, 2009 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries Martin Ferris TD has said that the review of EU fishing policy initiated yesterday by the publication of the Commission’s Green Paper is possibly the last opportunity to ensure the future survival and viability of the Irish fishery. The Green Paper will form the basis of a year long consultation process involving all stake holders and interested parties. Deputy Ferris said that Sinn Féin intends to make a submission.

Deputy Ferris said: “The Commission has recognised that ‘radical reform’ is required and part of that radical overhaul needs to be in relation to the allocation of quota in Irish waters, regardless of the so-called principle of ‘relative stability’ which enshrines a totally unfair distribution that has reduced Irish fishermen to minority stakeholders in Irish waters.

“That needs to be the fundamental position of the Irish Government and the overall Irish fishing sector. Anything less than that, in combination with a continuation of the current policy will in reality spell the effective end of the Irish fishing sector. That is the alternative to a genuine radical reform of the CFP.” ENDS
