Sinn Féin cautions Nigel Dodds on possible department cuts

23 April, 2009 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin Assembly Group Leader, John O’Dowd MLA has criticised remarks from the Finance Minister on slashing the number of government departments in order to meet cost efficiency savings.

Speaking today Mr O’Dowd said,

“I would caution the Minister for Finance Nigel Dodds on his latest remarks regarding possible cuts to government departments here in the north.

Nigel Dodds should not use British Government cuts as a smoke screen for DUP attempts at removing equality and power-sharing from government in the six counties.

Mechanisms are already in place to review the number of government departments and MLA’s etc, which are based on equality and fairness. This is the only mechanism that could be acceptable to Sinn Féin.

The current arrangements have their origins very firmly in the Good Friday Agreement and Sinn Féin will stand firmly in defence of the equality and power sharing arrangements secured.” CRÍOCH
