“Quinn Cement suspension of production worrying” Michelle Gildernew MP,MLA

23 April, 2009

Sinn Féin’s Michelle Gildernew MP.MLA (Fermanagh/South Tyrone) has described as worrying the news that Sean Quinn has announced suspension of production at his cement plants in Fermanagh and Cavan.    Michelle Gildernew said:   “This news is worrying even though it should not be surprising considering the major drop in construction projects. The Quinn Group is one of the most high profile and respected employers in Fermanagh and has contributed greatly to the local economy.   “Obviously few areas of commerce are avoiding the effects of the present economic downturn but our thoughts today must be with the workers and their families who may feel that they face an uncertain future.   “I welcome the assurance from the company that all jobs are secure but understand the nervousness being experienced by some workers who are now laid off for a month. Everything possible must be done to ensure that the plants reopen next month as expected and that new sources of orders are found to secure the jobs in the long-term.   “I am available to assist in whatever capacity the company and workers feel is appropriate.
