Government should fund Free Gaza aid operations – Ó snodaigh

23 April, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon Sinn Féin International Affairs Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern to make funding available to the Free Gaza Organisation which is attempting to bring aid to Gaza through siege breaking operations. Deputy Ó Snodaigh also called for the Irish Navy to give protection in International Waters to an upcoming mission involving a Flotilla boat travelling to Gaza.

He said, "The Minister has admitted that aid is not succeeding in getting through the Israeli blockade of Gaza. This is causing a humanitarian crisis in the region. Would the Minister not consider providing funding for the Free Gaza Organisation which is attempting to bring aid to Gaza through siege breaking operations.

"When myself and one of the Minister’s colleagues travelled to Gaza on a previous aid operation our Flotilla boat was intimidated by the Israeli Navy in International waters. There is another operation planned involving a Flotilla boat in May. Would the Minister consider using the Irish Navy to give protection to this boat while it is in International waters.

"We must all do everything in our power to help get aid into Gaza and relief the humanitarian crisis. But we must also take measures to bring about an end to the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza." ENDS
