Ó Caoláin expresses “grave concern” at ‘temporary’ cessation of production at Quinn Cement
Sinn Féin Dáil Leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has voiced "grave concern" at the announcement by the Seán Quinn Group of a temporary cessation of bulk cement production at both its Ballyconnell and Derrylin sites, with 65 workers told to stay away until mid next month.
Deputy Ó Caoláin stated that while he understood the negative impact of the decline in the construction sector, he had "grave concern for the workers involved and their families at this time of ever-deepening financial hardship" and urged the company to state clearly its expectations for a recovery in its bulk cement order book.
"It would be helpful to all the workforce, those now temporarily asked to stay away and those who remain at work, if the company spelled out its true position and what steps it is taking to address the current fall-down in demand.
"With my party colleague in Fermanagh, Minister for Agriculture Michelle Gildernew MP, I am willing to be of any assistance to the company and its workforce in addressing the difficulties now faced." ENDS
