Sinn Féin welcome setting up of new Lisburn Gay Rights Group
Sinn Féin has welcomed the setting up of a new Gay Rights group in Lisburn to represent the lesbian and gay community in the city. Sinn Féin MLA Paul Butler will attend the launch of the new group, which will take in the Cherry Room at Lisburn Council offices on Thursday 30th April at 6.00pm.
Paul Butler said:
‘I support this initiative by the gay community in Lisburn and I am glad to see it is taking place at Lisburn Council offices in the very room that Lisburn councillors tried to prevent civil partnerships taking place. “There is no excuse for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are not a community set apart from the heterosexual population.”
Paul Butler continued:
‘Sinn Féin will fight to ensure that the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people are not denied by bodies such as Lisburn Council. The gay community suffer from discrimination and harassment in every aspect of their daily lives. Sinn Féin plays, and will continue to play, an active role in securing equality for all sections of our society that have been denied the right to play a full and equal part in the community.’
