Welcome for Grant of £35 for Primary school Uniforms which will benefit 29.000 Children.
Sinn Féin Education spokesperson John O’Dowd MLA has welcomed the announcement by the Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, that 29,000 children are to benefit from her budget scheme which will see £35 per child available under a newly introduced scheme for school uniforms.
Mr O Dowd said;
“In figures, released under an Assembly question, it has been revealed that an estimated 29.000 children will be entitled to a grant of £35 towards off setting the cost of their primary school uniform. This announcement will no doubt be warmly welcomed by those families already under severe pressure due to the economic downturn and resulting increasing unemployment.
“Many families struggle to ensure their children are sent back to school at the beginning of a new school year in the proper uniform and gather the money for warm coats and shoes. The Minister intervention of £35 per child will greatly assist in that task.”
Concluding Mr O’ Dowd said;
“The scheme will be managed by the local Education and Library Boards and will be available for the 2009/10 school year. The entitlement criteria will be the same as that for assistance towards Post primary school uniforms and will be per child attending school so families with more than one child attending school will be able to claim the grant for each child.”
