Job announcements highlight need to identify further investment opportunities
Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on the Economy Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed the announcement of over 130 jobs given the recent high level of job losses. Mr. McLaughlin added that it highlights that despite the global economic challenges there are investment and job creation opportunities to be found.
Speaking today Mr McLaughlin said:
“The news that 50 jobs are being created by Magdalene in Belfast and 80 new positions by Dunelm Mill for Derry is very welcome given the recent announcement of high levels of jobs losses.
“The investments highlight that the high skills base of the workforce in Ireland enables and encourages investment in recovery when business is prepared to be innovative.
“Today’s investment announcements further highlight that government departments must adapt and change strategies when it comes to identifying opportunities for job creation and investment in the current challenging economic environment.
“However, this is not solely about job creation but also about job retention as new employment opportunities and company expansions can aid other firms in related fields such as supply, delivery and maintenance.
“In all this is a good new story but it must be built upon.”
