Economic policy must focus on all Ireland development for recovery –Sinn Féin

30 April, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Vice Chair of the Committee for Enterprise Trade & Investment, Jennifer McCann, has said that any review of  economic policy in the North  must look at supporting and developing local businesses and investment opportunities on an all island basis.

Ms McCann said:

“The Independent Review of Economic Policy currently being conducted offers an opportunity for organisations like Invest NI and the IDA to support and develop investment opportunities for local businesses particularly those from the SME and Social Economy sectors to retain existing jobs alongside creating new ones.

“While foreign investment has to be welcomed and encouraged the reality is that there is a slowdown in potential investors from overseas due to the economic recession.   We therefore need to maximize the opportunities to encourage local investment on an all island basis based on need and not in a competitive manner as is currently the case.

“Closer co-operation between organisations like Invest NI and the IDA who are responsible for investment, and the Departments, North and South, who are responsible for education and learning to develop the skills base, will have a more positive effect on business and lead to a more favourable economic climate in the future.
