Children’s Commissioner should focus in those who wish to perpetuate unfair educational selection

30 April, 2009 - by Michelle O'Neill

Sinn Féin MLA and member of the Education Committee Michelle O’Neill has stated that the Children’s Commissioner should be focusing on those who wish to maintain the discriminatory practice of academic selection in order to protect the rights of all of our children.

Speaking earlier Ms O’Neill said:

“The Children’s Commissioner has failed to identify her own role in relation to academic selection, the role of protecting the child.

“In her own response to the consultation on the clear guidelines that the Education Minster has issued, the Commissioner articulates how each child should be treated equally.

“Academic selection cannot achieve this outcome and as such her comments should be directed at those Grammar school Boards of Governors and the pro 11+ lobby who are pushing academic selection on our primary sector. It is this group that wish to  maintain the inequitable and discriminatory practice of selection at 11 for our children.”
