Minister opens new facilities at Warrenpoint Harbour
Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy today opened new £5million harbour facilities at Warrenpoint Harbour in Co Down.
Cutting the ceremonial ribbon on a new linkspan bridge used for roll-on roll-off ferry services, the Minister said: “This ceremony marks the first stage in a major upgrade of facilities by Warrenpoint Harbour Authority. Today's £5million investment represents the first stage of a scheme totalling £22million that will secure the long-term viability of the port and its contribution to the local economy.
"The bigger ships being used in the shipping industry places increasing demands on the ports both to accommodate them, and to ensure that they are loaded and unloaded as quickly and efficiently as possible. The ports therefore act as critical elements of the logistics chain for the economy - not least here at Warrenpoint Port, which plays a key role in servicing industry, retail and commerce along the eastern seaboard of Ireland."
The Minister welcomed two new vessels introduced by the ferry operator Seatruck on the route between Warrenpoint and Heysham.
Mr Murphy said: "I welcome the 65million euro investment by Seatruck in these magnificent new vessels. They are a very significant vote of confidence in the future of Warrenpoint port."
