Sinn Féin MLA’s attend Older Peoples Assembly debate in Stormont.
Sinn Féin MLA’s Mickey Brady and Francie Molloy have attended the Older Peoples Assembly Debate in Stormont today and have called for measures to empower this important section of our community to be advanced.
Speaking after the event Mr Brady said:
“This event was very enjoyable and useful exercise inviting older people from a number of organisations to come and debate a motion in the Senate chamber of the Assembly.
“This event gave older people an opportunity to air their view and for people who came today the whole Assembly at Stormont is a lot less remote than yesterday. It removes barriers and any form of apprehension that this section of our community have around accessing the institutions that represent them.
“In essence older members of our community are the people who have formed the society in which we live today and their contribution must be recognised and measures to empower them must be advanced. One such measure would be transforming the role of Advocate for Older People into a Commissioner for Older People, and the greater responsibility of this role as soon as possible.”
