May Day message - Defending Workers Rights

2 May, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has issued a May Day message of support to workers across Ireland.

The Six County MEP has said that Sinn Féin will use every available avenue to ensure the rights and entitlements of the workers are defended and upheld

Ms de Brún MEP said:

“In recent years there has been a weakening of the rights of working people and the ability of trade unions to negotiate better conditions for workers. Current EU policy not only promotes insecure employment and lower wages but also the liberalisation of public services.

“Sinn Féin has specifically challenged EU directives that would have undermined working conditions in Irish ports and stood shoulder to shoulder with workers across Ireland in the face of job losses and employers failing to give workers their full entitlements in relation to redundancies.

“The economic challenges facing us demand a new approach to creating and sustaining jobs, to protecting the rights of workers and tackling poverty.

“Sinn Féin has a strong track record on protecting workers rights and public services and has been to the fore in opposing any move to undermine the pay and conditions of working people in Ireland and across the EU.

“We need to stand together and demand real protections for workers and challenge all attempts to undermine hard won workers rights. We need to stand together to oppose the liberalisation and privatisation of our public services.

“Sinn Féin will use every avenue to ensure the rights and entitlements of the workers are defended and upheld.” ENDS
