Ritchie’s Downpatrick visit dismissed as merely more SDLP electioneering

3 May, 2009 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Fra McCann MLA has accused the Minister for Social Development of blatant electioneering during her recent visit to Downpatrick. Speaking on the issue Cllr McCann said,   “The Minister is well aware of land that is in both the Housing Executive’s and her department’s hands, in fact Sinn Fein has been pushing the Minister for some time to utilise this land, much of which is strategically placed to make a difference, and for it to be given to housing associations to build new houses, this would cut the cost of a housing unit by over a third and in some instances by a half.   Although the minister has said she will look at this, like other promises they have yet to materialise.   Her visit to Downpatrick is a cynical attempt to mislead people into believing that she will end the housing nightmare in Downpatrick and other areas across the north. The Minister needs to spell out how many houses she will build in this years housing programme in the Downpatrick area or any area across the Six Counties for that matter, over the next two years.” CRÍOCH
