Postal workers fees must be harmonised - de Brún

7 May, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has called for the harmonisation of fees for postal workers delivering items such as European election leaflets. This follows the refusal of postal staff in Derry to handle EU election material in protest at stark pay differentials for the delivery of such items across the north. Speaking today Ms de Brún said: “The fact that postal workers when delivering items such as election material in areas such as Derry, Limavady and Omagh are paid a great deal lower than those in other areas of the north of Ireland is wholly unacceptable. “The question is what is the justification of this large differential being paid to our postal workers depending on where the literature is delivered. It is the same item and therefore should have the same tariff. “What we need to see is the harmonisation of the fees that postal staff receive when delivering such items. “This however does not mean reducing the other areas fee but increasing areas such as Derry, Omagh and Ballymena to the rate of 6.6p per item as in Lisburn, Newtonabbey and Ballyclare.
