Hanafin's appeal to job seekers a load rubbish – Morgan

18 May, 2009

Sinn Féin's spokesperson on finance, Arthur Morgan TD, has described Minister Mary Hanafin's appeal to the 50,000 young people currently unemployed to further their education as disingenuous.

Deputy Morgan said today, "Minister Hanafin knows all too well that the education system has no capacity to upskill the thousands of younger people who are signing on. For the Minister to come out three weeks before an election and urge job seekers to upgrade is cynical and dishonest.

"The Government has done nothing for job seekers. The education programmes which were announced in April's emergency budget are vague and aspirational.

"The Minister's announcement on the numbers of new places provided for further education is based on spin and fantasy. Anecdotal evidence shows that the length of courses is being cut to boost numbers while the majority of new courses are based in virtual classrooms.

"Minister Hanafin would be better actually concentrating on providing education to younger people rather than focusing on misleading press releases." ENDS
