Lisbon Treaty – Failed treaty of a failed time written by failed politicians

18 May, 2009

Responding to today’s Irish Times/TNS mrbi poll Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald MEP said the fact remains that the Lisbon Treaty is a bad deal for Ireland adding, “Lisbon is a failed treaty of a failed time written by failed politicians.”

The leading No to Lisbon Campaigner said:

“The fact remains that the Lisbon Treaty is a bad deal for Ireland and Europe, that’s why it has failed to win popular support on three separate occasions. Lisbon is a failed treaty of a failed time written by failed politicians. Ireland and Europe need a new Treaty for the new time we are in.

“The government has yet to even publish the so called ‘legally binding’ guarantees so no amount of rhetoric from the government can take away from the fact that it has in all likelihood gotten nothing for the Irish people following their rejection of treaty last summer.

“As for Ireland’s place in Europe, there is no question of Ireland being outside of Europe. The people’s defeat of the Lisbon Treaty has nothing to do with Ireland’s recession. The blame for the collapse of the public finances and soaring unemployment lies squarely at the government’s door. And arguably the politics of centralisation, privatisation and militarism will make Europe’s economy a whole lot worse.

“Fianna Fáil MEP Eoin Ryan argued recently that we ‘need to know who are friends are in Europe’ and make our decisions on Lisbon accordingly. It is exactly that kind of Fianna Fáil-ism of cosy cartels and backroom deals that led us to where we are now. Can we really trust these people to represent our interests in the EU? Lisbon is a bad deal. And when the government publishes its meaningless deal later this year and the campaign proper begins I have no doubt we will see the same result on Lisbon 2 as we did the first time round.” ENDS
