Government Should Think Imaginatively And Support Waterford Crystal Workers
Supporting today's demonstration in Waterford, EU Candidate Toiréasa Ferris, called on the government to think imaginatively and find means to support the Waterford Crystal Workers. Toiréasa Ferris said: "I want to express my solidarity with today's demonstration in support of the Waterford workers. Local support for the workers shows just how critical it is to keep the company open for business." "This is a viable and possibly vibrant business. Workers have invested hugely in Waterford Crystal, both with their labour and their flexibility in maintaining the viability of the business. These workers are highly skilled and Waterford Crystal fits perfectly into the profile of highly skilled and export orientated businesses that the government says is the future of our economy." "The present crisis comes about while the government had their eye off the ball. I urge them to break away from their obsession with making cuts in people's wages and conditions. Waterford Crystal gives the government an obvious opportunity to show that they are serious about job maintenance. Developing and supporting Irelands indigenous export industries will bring about confidence in the wider economy and begin to halt the acute hemorrhage in jobs."
