Mindless thugs behind racist attack

9 February, 2009

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that he is horrified at reports of a racist attack on a Bangladeshi student outside his home on the Donegall Road at the weekend. Mr Maskey has said that those in positions of political responsibility who have, in recent weeks, made irresponsible comments in relation to foreign nationals living here must bear some of the responsibility for such attacks.

Alex Maskey also labelled the PSNI response to the incident 'completely unacceptable'.

Alex Maskey MLA said,

"I am absolutely disgusted at reports of this attack which took place on Friday. Those who carry out such attacks can only be described as mindless thugs.

"Those politicians who have, in recent weeks, made irresponsible comments against foreign nationals must bear some of the responsibility for this attack. Attacks such as this are the outworking of their irresponsible comments.
The South Belfast MLA added,

"The response of the PSNI to this incident was completely unacceptable. If they are to gain the confidence of the community then they will have to do much better than telling people who have been victims of attacks that they are too busy to respond".
