Bank executives should be told to hand back bonuses – Morgan

10 February, 2009

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD called on the Government to ensure that bank executives hand back all bonuses and half their salaries received over the last three years.

Deputy Morgan said, "The Government must realise that it is tax-payers money which is being handed over to banking executives to bail them out. The banks cannot survive without this bail out from the tax-payer and therefore the Government should appreciate the strong position that they are in.

"The Government must dictate to the banks that senior executives salaries should be capped, indeed that they should hand back all bonuses and half of their salaries received over the last three years, that people who are in genuine mortgage difficulties are given a moratorium and that small to medium sized enterprises must have access to a reasonable level of funding necessary to maintain their viable business.

"We have had enough messing around from these characters in the banks - its time to sort it out and move on." ENDS
