Poots should withdraw remark – O’Dowd

17 February, 2009

John O' Dowd MLA has criticised DUP MLA Edwin Poots for referring to the non Grammar school sector as 'bog standard Comprehensives' in an Assembly question to Education Minister Caitríona Ruane.

Mr O Dowd said,

Mr Poots by his assertion in the Assembly today has labelled any school which is not a Grammar school as a 'Bog standard Comprehensives'. Such comments are an insult to the hard working dedicated staff and pupils of the vast majority of our post primary schools who are non Grammar and who deliver an excellent education system to post primary school pupils in the North.

"Mr Poots would be well advised to look at the excellent exam results and all round educational experience of pupils coming out of non Grammars before making such disparaging remarks about them.

Concluding Mr O' Dowd said

"I would call on Mr Poots, whom is a member of the Assembly's Education Committee, to retract his offensive remark and to respect the work and achievements of the non Grammar sector. ENDS.
