Sinn Féin calls for legislation to compel witnesses to appear before Oireachtas Committees

17 February, 2009

Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan has called for legislation to be enacted to empower the Oireachtas to persons under scrutiny to make an appearance in front Oireachtas Committees and to furnish any documents requested by the Oireachtas. Deputy Morgan also requests that this legislation make it a criminal offence to refuse to co-operate with any such requests.

Speaking in the Dáil the Sinn Féin Deputy said "There is a need to compel former chairman of Anglo-Irish Seán Fitzpatrick to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Economic Regulatory Affairs.

"Furthermore there is a need for legislation to be enacted to empower the Oireachtas to order persons under scrutiny of any committee to make an appearance and to furnish any documents requested by the Oireachtas and to make it a criminal offence to refuse to co-operate with any such requests."
