Housing waiting list figures alarming, Minister Ritchie it's over to you – McCann

18 February, 2009

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson and West Belfast MLA Fra McCann has once again called on the Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie to inform people of what practical plans she has in place to assist those citizens languishing on the social housing waiting list.

Cllr McCann was speaking after the Housing Executive released a report today stating that the amount of people on the waiting list for social housing has doubled over the past six years. According to the Chief Executive of the Housing executive Paddy McIntyre, the numbers now exceed 40,000.

Speaking this evening Mr McCann said,

"These figures are becoming increasingly desperate and yet all we are hearing from the Minister, if you refer back to Sunday's Politics Show, is excuses and everyone else in the Executive getting blamed.

"I want to know and people need to know what this Minister plans to do to bring these shocking figures down. She cannot continue in her all too familiar frame of mind of blaming everyone else. The SDLP need to face up to their responsibilities in Government and Margaret Ritchie must bring forward detailed plans and proposals to the Executive on how she as Minister with this responsibility helps to lift citizens out of the desperate situation of waiting on social housing."
