Ferris calls for action on Waste Management Scheme
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has reiterated his call for the Farm Waste Management Scheme to be implemented within the promised time frame, and for farmers who will be at a loss because of loans they have taken out to be compensated for having to meet their interest repayments. The Kerry North TD was speaking at a meeting of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee today.
Deputy Ferris said, "There is no excuse for the Government to renege on its commitments under the Waste Management Scheme. Farmers took part in good faith and considerable amounts of money have been borrowed in order to complete works on the understanding that the money would be paid to them on time.
"I would also call for farmers who have taken loans but who will now not be paid until next year to be compensated for the considerable extra costs incurred through interest rates. Should the Government not give an undertaking on this then legal action might be the best course for farmer representatives to take." ENDS
