Tánaiste must intervene to stop SR Technics closure

19 February, 2009 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Following a meeting today with Trade Union Officials from SR Technics to discuss the closure of the Dublin base by SRTZurick Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has called on the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Coughlan to immediately intervene with the sole objective of holding onto these highly skilled jobs. Sinn Féin Economic Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD and Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD were also in attendance.

The Dublin MEP said:

“Mary Coughlan cannot continue to sit on her hands. How many more Dell’s, Waterford Crystal’s or SR Technics have to happen before the Tanaiste realises that it is not enough to issue a mere statement on foot of these announcement expressing regret. She needs to get her coat on and go out and meet with company management with the objective of finding an alternative to business closures and job losses.

“It is crystal clear from the evidence presented to myself and my colleagues by SR Technics Trade Union Officials today that what SRT Zurick is engaged in what can only be described as commercial sabotage.

“SR Technics is a viable business and could be sold on as going concern to another investor. Instead of choosing this option it appears that SRT Zurich who own the company are intent on closing the Dublin base in an effort to consolidate this element of the aviation market for themselves.

“This high skilled, high tech company is of significant strategic importance to the country and is still profitable. Jobs at SR Technics can be saved if the government takes the appropriate actions immediately.” ENDS
