MacLochlainn welcomes Donegal and Sligo's exemption from Air Travel Tax

25 February, 2009

Sinn Féin's European election candidate for the North West constituency Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn has welcomed today's announcement that Donegal and Sligo Airports will be exempt from the air travel tax announced in Budget 09 pending a legislative change to increase the exemption threshold from 10,000 departing passengers in the previous year to 50,000 departing passengers.

Councillor MacLochlainn said, "I welcome this u-turn from the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan as, if implemented, the air travel tax would have had a detrimental impact on both Sligo and Donegal airports.

"The very reason these airports were built was because of poor access to these regions. The Government should be investing in and promoting the use of these airports rather than creating impediments to travelling to these counties.

"The Government now needs to release the €86million announced in February 2007 for regional airports which has been on hold." ENDS
