The Public has no confidence in Environment Minister

26 February, 2009

Sinn Féin Environmental Spokesperson and North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has rounded on Minister Sammy Wilson. He said that the Minister was doing a disastrous job and that the no confidence vote taken by the Environment Committee was reflective of wider society.

Speaking at the Environment Committee's meeting with the Minister today Mr McKay said:

"This Committee has no confidence in the Minister - but it goes much further than that. The environmental sector has no confidence in him, the public have no confidence in him, his Executive colleagues and even members of his own party have no confidence in him.

"Since the Industrial Revolution the earth has warmed up by 0.75 degrees celsius and this has already had a devastating impact on the world's poor and biodiversity. If this increases over the next couple of decades, as forecast, the environmental, social and economic effects will be devastating.

"The general public recognises that human activity influences Climate Change and they also recognise that the Minister is doing a disastrous job. Indeed it's not Climate Change that the public want to see happening - its Ministerial change." ENDS
