Molann Sinn Féin méadú in úsáid na Gaeilge san Oireachtas

5 March, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Tá sé molta ag Sinn Féin go mbéadh aontú idir na páirtithe chun usáid na Gaeilge san Oireachtas a mhéadú i 2009. Mar tús ar seo tá rún curtha os comhair na Dála agus an tSeanaid ag Sinn Féin ag iarraidh go mbeadh 50% de ghnó an Oireachtais trí Ghaeilge le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge ar 10, 11 agus 12 Márta.

Dúirt Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, Aoire Shinn Féin san Oireachtas:

"I mbliana táimíd ag comóradh an Chéad Dáil Éireann agus caithfear cuimhniú go raibh gnó na Céad Dála 90 bliain ó shin go hiomlán trí Ghaeilge. Is í an Ghaeilge an teanga náisiúnta agus an phríomhtheanga oifigiúil faoi Airteagal 8 den Bhunreacht. Is teanga bheo í taobh istigh agus taobh amuigh den Ghaeltacht. In ainneoin sin uile is annamh a chloistear í san Oireachtas.

"Mar sin tá Sinn Féin ag iarraidh ar an Dáil agus ar an Seanad a bheartú

úsáid na Gaeilge a mhéadú i 2009 go céadatán a bheidh aontaithe idir na páirtithe. Táimíd ag iarraidh tús a chur le seo le linn 'Seachtain na Gaeilge' sa Dáil agus sa Seanad ar 10,11,12 Márta nuair a bheidh gnó 50% trí mheán na Gaeilge.

"Chomh maith le sin táimíd ag iarraidh go mbeadh Ceisteanna chun an Taoiseach trí Ghaeilge amháin sa seachtain seo chugainn.

"Níl anseo ach léiriú gur féidir an dátheangachas a chur i bhfeidhm san Oireachtas agus ní hamháin le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge. Tá súil againn go mbeidh an Rialtas agus na páirtithe uile ag tacú leis an rún seo." Críoch

Sinn Féin proposes increase in use of Irish in the Oireachtas

Sinn Féin has proposed that there should be agreement between the political parties to increase the use of the Irish language in the Oireachtas in 2009. As a start the party has tabled a motion in the Dáil and Seanad urging that 50% of Oireachtas business be in Irish on 10, 11 & 12 March, during Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Sinn Féin Party Whip in the Oireachtas, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, said:

"This year we are commemorating the First Dail Éireann and it should be remembered that the business of the First Dáil 90 years ago was entirely through Irish. Irish is the national language and the first official language under Article 8 of the Constitution. It is a living language inside and outside the Gaeltacht. Despite, this, it is rarely heard in the Oireachtas.

"For this reason Sinn Féin is urging the Dail and Seanad to resolve to increase the use of Irish in 2009 to a percentage to be agreed between the parties. We are urging that as a start 50% of business be conducted through Irish during Seachtain na Gaeilge in the Dáil and Seanad on 10, 11 & 12 March.

"We are also urging that Taoiseach's Questions be conducted entirely through Irish next week.

"We see this as demonstrating that bilingualism can be implemented in the Oireachtas and not only during Seachtain na Gaeilge. I hope that all parties will support this initiative." ENDS
